Jean Sietzema Dickson’s What is a Huggle? is a delightful book suitable for lower primary and pre-school children.
A group of primary children visited the Melbourne Zoo some years ago and later wrote asking what kind of an animal a huggle was. The question was passed to Jean and her answer took the form of a charming poem to bring pleasure to young readers.
The illustrations are inviting and imaginative, encouraging young readers to colour them in on a wet Sunday afternoon.
and if huggle lives within you brain
to spur imagination,
perhaps, one day you’ll see one,
while you’re waiting at the station!

A question from a child visiting Melbourne Zoo was the genesis of this small book by this experienced Victorian writer, editor and poet. Although its original booklet format was produced as a fundraiser for a support group for the disabled, it proved a popular amongst grandparents. The description of the attributes and antics of the imaginary huggle provide a message of comfort and reassurance for young children. Chatty rhyming verse and whimsical black and white line drawings add to the mix. NS

This is a nonsense poem about an imaginary creature. The children can colour in the illustrations, and they will enjoy the silliness. WN
