A Different Road reviews
From the author:
In telling my story, I would like to show readers that God works in people’s lives through their disability. I have partial vision, and as a child I was hurt when others laughed at me. I felt useless. But God had a special job lined up for me – caring for my daughter, Janelle, who has severe cerebral palsy. God gave me the strength to keep going each day and healed my deep hurts as I gave them over to him. I learned although God didn’t heal either Janelle or me physically, he loves us. The strength he gives is testimony to his power to bring good out of difficult situations.

A Different Road is an autobiography that could only be written by one who has travelled along a very unusual track in life.
Born with very limited sight - a disability that went undetected and untreated for some years, Shirley learned to live with what to her was ‘normal’ - a world of people, trees, houses shrouded in a deep fog. School was nightmarish; these were the times when it was normal for many teachers to lack perception and sensitivity towards anyone with a disability. As for bullying fellow students…
With advances in medical knowledge Shirley’s sight improved a little but she was still legally blind and unable to drive or see with clarity.
As though this problem was not enough, Shirley’s third child suffers from severe cerebral palsy. Her story continues, showing how the Jamieson family did all that could be done for Janelle to achieve the best possible quality of life.
A Different Road covers about 50 years of Shirley’s life. It brings to awareness the need for ordinary people in the church and in the marketplace, too, to be educated to care for carers. It highlights just how difficult life is for a child who is sight-impaired and how disrupted life can be for the family. Above all, I believe the book is essential reading for anyone who cares for a handicapped person. DS
