What your membership does NOT include:
- An appraisal does NOT include editing. It tells you what level of editing you need. It tells you whether you are ready to submit to a publisher or whether you should work at another draft. An appraisal takes time and expertise and we generally have a queue for them. Please do not expect to get one straight away.
- Advice is always given to the best of our ability and current knowledge. We make no guarantees regarding publication.
- Marketing. Although we offer marketing opportunities for our members from time to time - and indeed endeavour to create them for the benefit of our members as well as the wider writing community - please do not send unsolicited marketing material and expect us to distribute it.
- Ongoing editorial consultancy, project management for publication, co-writing or ghost writing as an unpaid follow-up service. Please do not have unrealistic expectations of your appraiser. An initial appraisal is an enormously valuable gift, worth hundreds of dollars. Please value and appreciate your appraiser’s time and effort by blessing them in return: take the opportunity to buy one or more of their books at a bookstore. This will bless the appraiser, the publisher, the distributor, the bookseller - the wider Australian and NZ publishing industry - and you, too! If you do not have the patience to wait for a new appraisal next year, consider the possibility of engaging an editor. Our editors are extremely generous with their rates and time but they are unable to offer unlimited free work.
- Legal advice. We are happy to give general advice but, for specific concerns, we encourage you to join and consult ASA (Australian Society of Authors) and your local state writing centre.
