God's Poetry

GOD’S POETRY
ANNE HAMILTON
EVEN BEFORE PUBLISHING.

I should have been more prepared to expect the unexpected when I picked up Anne Hamilton’s latest book God’s Poetry. Having read her previous trilogy of little gems The Singing Silence, The Listening Land and The Winging Word where she uses her mathematic mind to illustrate the presence of God throughout His entire creation God’s Poetry was still a surprise.

God’s Poetry is essentially aboutour name and how our name impacts both our identity and our destiny. It articulates who we are and how far we have gotten away from the Jesus and the Hebraic concept of both name and destiny. We have adopted a Greek way of believing and thinking about a Hebrew world-view and we have done this at our peril.

This little book would make an excellent gift to all who struggle with their identity and destiny, especially those who find their destiny blocked. We are each God’s special poem and we can find this message encoded throughout Scripture when we know how to interpret the message - or rather translate the Hebraic words. Anne studied Hebrew so as to get her facts straight!!

Even Before Publishing

While this book’s title may seem to flag an anthology about the divine, the subtitle immediately discloses a somewhat more prosaic topic – people’s names. No one would deny that the Christian names given to babies at birth affect them throughout their whole life. An individual may like or dislike their name depending on whether it makes them the butt of jokes and teasing, or whether it is fashionable or an apt descriptor. But this book delves far more deeply into the significance of a person’s name. The author believes that people’s names are God’s poetic imprints that determine their destiny and provide answers to life’s big questions.

Underlying this premise is much thorough research, interspersed with interesting stories and pithy quotes, both ancient and modern. The latter part of the book deals with the seven ‘I am…’ sayings of Christ, the ‘name above all names’. Just as in the preceding discussion, the author gently draws the reader into looking at these names in a new light. Close examinations of language and a wealth of endnotes provide even more insights. The  reader is ecouraged to reconsider present life habits, and to assess what it personally means to be God’s special creation, named for a purpose, as ‘God’s poem – as individual and gorgeous as tomorrow’s sunrise.’ Informative, thought provoking and re-affirming!
