GIRLZ JUST WANNA BE LOVED

At a time when popular culture sets the moral code for living and families are increasingly fractured, Liz Walker’s brave book, Girlz Just Wanna Be Loved, should be requisite reading for every young woman.
Filled with supporting statistics, worksheets, poignant poetry and Walker’s compelling personal testimony, no stone is left unturned in this often confronting, but non-judgemental, guide. You may blush at the mention of porn, masturbation, pleasure, lust, homosexuality and ‘sleeping around’, but Walker tackles these issues, along with the emotional and spiritual deficit present that causes so many women to debase their bodies, to build an authoritative, all-encompassing picture of modern female sexuality. Walker could have taken the safe path, avoiding the controversial issues to play up self-love and abstinence, but her reluctance to do so makes this a powerful book with the potential to challenge the status quo.
Ultimately, Walker encourages us to seek healing and fulfillment in relationship with God, but, sensitive to the pressures of the world, she’s not interested in sugarcoating a complex issue by selling us a quick-fix solution. For this reason, Girlz Just Wanna Be Loved will resonate with Christian women and secular girls alike.

GIRLS JUST WANT TO BE LOVED

There are lots of mind-blowing / gob-smacking aspects to this book. Firstly there is the motivation for this Queensland author’s writing - her turbulent teen years which were pock-marked with pornography, promiscuity drugs and alcohol. Secondly there is the huge amount of information and advice to assist teenage girls to make wise choices when considering sexual experiences and intimate relationships. Thirdly there is the huge variety of writing styles used both to challenge and reassure: the forthright confrontation of questions and personal narratives hand in hand with evocative analogies and gentle affirmations. Fourthly there is the colourful formatting and Jacinth Foote’s artwork that complement the various moods of the text. The Tools and Links page on www.lvlup.com.au/toolslinks/ offers a list of Aussie support services. This is a useful handbook, with an interactive feel, for teens (both churched and unchurched) as well as parents, teachers and carers of adolescent girls, and the gold winner in the 2009 USA Independent Publisher Book Awards! Girls Just Wanna Be Loved by Liz Walker is a timely book that presents a challenge to teenage girls and indeed girls of all ages to believe in their self-worth and to recognise that they deserve respect. In a world where many girls are sexualised from a very young age this book teaches through personal witnessing, journaling, art work and poetry to lead young women and teenagers to a place where they are better able to make informed choices about sex and sexuality.
Young women are facing a sexual crisis and being unable to discover a better way of living they often feel defiled and of little value. Girlz Just Wanna Be Loved has the capacity to cause females to re-evaluate their lifestyle and choices and in journaling their feelings and responses come to a new level and put their faith in Jesus Christ.
This is a much needed book in today’s world.
