THE GIFT OF VALUES

Fully titled Volume One, The Gift of Values—A Resource for Family Devotions, and backed by Rosie Boom’s experience homeschooling her six children, this book is full of simple yet profound lessons for children facing the challenges of growing up. Conveniently arranged in topic headings that you can find in a moment from the page tabs, you can work through this book in order, or pick out the topics you wish to address. Each topic is a particular value— honesty, positive attitude, courage, diligence, perseverance and obedience. There are stories, Bible verses, questions, titbits to think about, and activity ideas. It is like an orchard full of luscious and laden fruit trees that you can walk through and pick whatever takes your eye.
The stories themselves are full of fascinating bits of information, drawn from many cultures, histories, family life, and even biology. Though not specifically Bible stories, they are all based on Godly principles and supported by a host of Bible verses, both of which I have been reading to my children the past couple of weeks. They enjoy the stories, the little rhymes and thinking challenges. The questions lead easily to a deeper discussion of things they face in their own lives.
At the back of the book are some photos of Rosie Boom’s family, and contact details should you wish to line her up for a speaking engagement. Rosie Boom has published other children’s books, and is also a singer/songwriter with her husband Chris. You can check out her other books as well as Volume Two of this devotion series at www.boomfamily.co.nz.
I recommend this devotion resource to anyone who relates to children. It would make a valuable addition to your regular Bible story education. It is a very sound, Biblically based study that will encourage children to grow into people of strength and character, better able to withstand the temptations that surround us all in everyday life.

The format for each topic includes an introductory meditation, family anecdotes, focus questions, ideas for activities, topical quotes and Bible verses. Last of all is a Dig Deeper section with extra stories, discussion starters and song suggestions. Mother of six and a home-schooler, Boom knows what she’s talking about. This is an excellent resource for people wanting to have effective, interesting and fun family devotions. She uses examples from her family life, stories from other people’s lives and quotations from famous people. Then she follows these with interesting questions for discussion and activities. She also recommends books, movies and music which fit the themes. She provides material that will suit both younger children and teens. Beautifully presented and cleverly written, this is a must for every family’s bookshelf. WN
