OUTBACK EVANGELIST – THE STORY OF ERNEST KRAMER

Faith Kramer Metters and Elva Schroeder

Peacock Publications

Probably the slimmest section of any Christian bookshop is that reserved for Australian heroes of the faith. This 120-page volume of Swiss-born Ernest Kramer doesn’t truly fit as he arrived in Australia at the age of 20 and wed Australian-born Euphemia Buchanan in 1912.

The book title should carry both names as little 5 ft 9 ins (145cm) Effie was more than just a bit player. They set out together to go where God led and to trust Him only for their needs. Their mission field was inland Australia and their sheep were its isolated inhabitants, some of whom didn’t speak English and had never heard the gospel message. Their era was one in which Aborigines didn’t even have citizenship in their own country.

It’s a well-written, positive, detailed account of this couple’s ministry and the faithfulness of the God they served.

Ernest and Effie Kramer spent 21 years of their lives taking the gospel and practical help to both whites and blacks in the interior of Australia. Their lives were given gladly in loving service to their Lord, and out of a deep love and compassion for the Aboriginal people. Unfortunately some of the terminologies used in the book are no longer considered acceptable by Indigenous people and it is a shame they could not have been changed prior to publication. WN
