Christine Harding certainly challenges our perception of how we in the church see and do mission. We claim to be missionary minded but are we really what we say we are? Mission is Not an Optional Extra confronts every believer with the choice to live what they believe. God does not call us all to go to mission in Africa or Asia but He does call some. He does call us all to bloom where we are planted and challenges us to make a difference right where we live.
That is the main message that I gained from the book but at the same time God does call some to overseas missions and Christine served with her husband for 10 years in Japan. The book is soundly based in Scripture, is easy to read and makes good sense of many things in church life that can appear to be out of balance.
I think that almost every believer would benefit from reading this book but it should be especially helpful to pastors and those in leadership positions. DS
