BROKEN WING BUTTERFLY

Renee Bennett

Renee Bennett

There is no one better able to help and mentor girls wounded by the pain of divorce and family breakdown than one who has triumphed over a similar misfortune.

Renee Bennett likens such girls to a butterfly with a broken wing. The girls are beautiful and have untold potential but so often they fail to make the most of their God-given talents.

Since 43% of Australian marriages now end in divorce close to half our young people are bruised and crying on the inside. From her own experience and the experiences of many young girls and women, Renee Bennett has collected and collated true stories and written an excellent self-help book broken wing butterfly. The book affirms these girls by encouraging journaling, goal setting and other positive actions. It looks at that which has caused pain but it does not dwell on it.

Would I recommend this book? As soon as I finished it, I bought a copy for two of my lovely teenage granddaughters. Just as a butterfly’s broken wing can heal, so too, with careful handling, can the emotional pain of family breakdown become a thing of the past.

BROKEN WING BUTTERFLY
Renee Bennett
When she was very young, the author’s family split up. Her parent’s divorce was accompanied by dissension, sadness, bitterness and enmity. She cleverly uses the analogy of a fragile butterfly when discussing the effects of divorce on sensitive young children. This slick workbook seeks to affirm young girls who have similar experiences, helping them work through the issues, cope with emotional and physical changes, escape the cycle of brokenness, become aware of self-destructive habits, and learn not to repeat these behaviours in adulthood. Many personal anecdotes are included. The advice is thorough and carefully structured but offered at a secular level. It singles out divorce as the sole cause of dysfunction and by default, omits other contributing factors. NS

Herself a child from a broken home, Bennett aims to inform and encourage other young people whose parents have separated, particularly girls, as they struggle to deal with their pain, disillusionment and fear. She shares her own history and thereby shows that the cycle of brokenness can be healed, and young people aren’t condemned to repeat the same mistakes in their own lives. There are also stories from other girls who have been through the same experience, as well as lots of space for the reader to do their own journalling.  WN
