Barossa Women Reviews

Barossa Women

Margaret Stiller

Tiltili Books

Like a fine robust wine from a master vintner, Barossa Women is best savoured slowly. On the surface, it’s a combination of light romance and family saga but it has a rich and complex body: the sense of history and the tug of place is strong, like a mellow flavour pervading the whole.

The story spans over 150 years in South Australian history, one generation of women yielding to the next. The change in society, in relationships between men and women as well as the way they view each other comes across with a genuine ‘that was the way it was’ feel. The language of the different characters matches their era. Not every story ends happily ever after; some of the Barossa women marry for love, others do not.

It would be all too easy to dismiss this book as just another inspirational romance, an hour or two’s lightweight entertainment. But it’s rare to come away from a book, as I did with Barossa Women, finding that I couldn’t get some parts of the story out of my mind. Is this a work of immense significance for future generations, not because it’s ‘true’, but because the information it contains is invaluable?

Tucked away in this small book are background revelations which I suspect are spiritual dynamite. Buy it. Keep it. Put it away against that day when a still small voice says, ‘Take out Barossa Women. There’s something there you need to know so you can pray through it.’

That’s the way I felt as I ended the book. As if it contained a key to something important and that, in the fullness of time, I would discover what it was.
